D-Link AC1200 Wi-fi Router – Everything You Need To Know

The D-Link Wireless AC1200 Dual Band Gigabit router is an affordable, feature packed option. It is part of a new roundup of D-Link routers. While many of the earlier models were released in 2013, the D-Link Wireless AC1200 Dual Band Gigabit router was launched in November 2015. Since it is a budget model, it does not come with a guest network or Gigabit Ethernet ports.

If you want to find out more about this router, go on and read our detailed review on wireless routers!

One of the most noticeable features of the AC1200 Dual Band Gigabit router is the antennas. It has 4 antennas, Gigabit Ethernet, and 2 5 GHz radios. The good news is that the company did not cut costs on the WiFi aspect of the router. However, this router lacks a USB port which is one of the reasons behind the lower price. Also, the chipset speed is not mentioned, but this along with is lack of advanced features do not impact performance adversely. Additionally, it lacks the GHz radios that more expensive models come with. For instance, the Netgear R7000 comes with 3 additional 5 GHz radios, but it is much costlier. It offers a great balance of performance, features, and price.

If you’re looking for high-speed wireless and wired connectivity, this may be the router for you. It can give you speeds of close to 1200 Mbps using the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz frequency bands. This will allow you to run various multimedia applications smoothly. It will allow devices such as gaming consoles, smart TVs, and storage devices to perform efficiently thanks to the Gigabit Ethernet ports.

Thanks to the dual-band wireless connectivity, you will be able to play games, chat and surf the web on one band while at the same time stream digital media on your tablet and other media players on the other band.

It is also a breeze to set up and secure. It allows you to share your web connection in the simplest way possible. It has a setup wizard that will take you through instructions one step at a time. All you need to do is open your web browser and launch the setup wizard. It is also possible to set up guest WiFi if you want to give your guests access to the internet without allowing them to access your other files.

Power Consumption

When it comes to power consumption, the D-Link Wireless AC1200 Dual Band Gigabit router is one of the best routers out there. When compared with even the most premium routers such as the Netgear R700, it offers better power efficiency. It has an easy to use scheduling function that allows you to turn the WiFi off when you’re not using it. You also have the option to turn it off at night to save power.

The D-Link Wireless AC1200 Dual Band Gigabit router performs exceptionally well at close range. But it does have the limitation that it can only properly cater to a single client consuming a high bandwidth. The way to get around this is by keeping the lower bandwidth devices on the 2.4 GHz channel. For instance, you could perform actions like using WhatsApp or Netflix on the 2.4 GHz band, while using the 5 GHz band for rapid file transfers.

One disadvantage of the D-Link Wireless AC1200 Dual Band Gigabit router is that it does not offer optimal 5GHz performance in hard to access places. It is also not an ideal device if you need to use many devices at the same time that require a high amount of bandwidth. In such cases, you may better off opting for a pricier model such as the R7000. For people with smaller homes, the D-Link wireless router has plenty to offer.

The gauge of how well this router performs comes down to how you will be using it. It performs decently at medium range and is excellent at close range. However, at long distances or if your place has concrete floors, its performance is disappointing. The lack of smart beam technology is probably the reason behind this. The performance also suffers when multiple high broadband requiring clients are connected to the network. This device is ideal for a single 5GHz client requiring high bandwidth. You’re better off opting for a premium router if you need more than 100Mbps+ on many devices.

Final Thoughts

The D-Link Wireless AC1200 Dual Band Gigabit router is an extremely affordable option that offers excellent throughput performance. It also has 4 wired LAN ports and is extremely easy to use and install. On the downside, it does not come with USB ports, and the antennas cannot be removed for easy transport. But if you’re looking for a router that provides you with dual-band WiFi and comes with plenty of management settings for customization, the D-Link Wireless AC1200 router is a great buy.
